Government websites and colour tonality

I stumbled upon Number10 today and the first thought that occurred to me was “Wow. This is an incredibly dark and bleary looking website.” One cannot but wonder if the dark, muted colours reflect the current British government’s general outlook on its day-to-day job.

Here’s a quick comparison between the US, UK and German governments’ online representations:

The White House still comes out on top with its solid “corporate” design style. Also, it feels a lot lighter than Number 10 with its dark and heavy masthead. Bundesregierung.de looks absolutely German: sober, serious, but not hopeless (which is the feeling I get when I look at number10.gov.uk). Of course, the blues are a lot more muted next to Obama’s online home, and the lack of embellishments is apparent, but — I guess that’s “us”.

Slick stuff, even if the effect has become overused since the Telekom ads.

“CSS3 effects on a website are like salt & pepper to a meal. The right amount of seasoning leads to a great experience, too much ruins the taste.”

In my opinion this is one of the best short movies I have ever seen. Visually composed to perfection, fantastic narrative and a gripping story.

I can not recommend this enough.
